I was blown away by the beauty of this bright red flower when I was walking on a wildflower trail in the Grand Tetons during a summer day. A striking scarlet with white flecks in the center, this flower has a vibrancy that is eye-catching.

The Latin name for Skyrocket flower (Ipomopsis aggregata) actually comes from the Greek language and means "striking appearance." The flower is pollinated by hummingbirds and grows up to six feet tall at high elevation in a variety of environments, including mountain meadows, desert canyons and subalpine rock fields. Wild elk and deer graze on this flower and other names for this flower include Scarlet Gilia and Skunk Flower (it’s said to have an unpleasant odor).
Skyrocket was used as an herbal remedy by several tribes in the U.S.: the Great Basin people used an infusion for blood diseases, and the Hopi used it for mothers who’d recently given birth but were still in bed after three weeks. The Navajo used it for spider bites, as a laxative or to induce vomiting; it was also considered a talisman to attract good luck for hunters and their weapons.
