What are the best natural remedies for flu/cold?
What home remedies for cold/flu are effective?
What natural remedies are best for cold and flu prevention?
If people around you are dropping like flies due to nasty viruses and bacteria, there are a few things I like to do to keep my immune system strong and prevent from getting it in the first place!
If you’re feeling funky, choose one or more of the below - and just remember - consistency is key.
This might sound weird, but it’s pretty delicious. Everything gets boiled, so don’t worry about having bad breath; it’s not an issue. If you’re going to work, make a thermos of it and bring it to work!
Buy a bunch of fresh ginger roots, a few bundles of scallions/green onions, and lots of garlic (pro-tip: Asian grocery stores have huge flats of pre-peeled!). Slice the ginger, flatten/crush the garlic on the back of a big knife (to release the essential oils) and cut off the ends of the green onions and toss it all into a pot of boiling water. You can add maple syrup to taste, though I never do anymore. You can also add fresh lemon or lime juice for extra detoxing power.
Ginger is excellent for your circulation. It moves chi, expels excess or toxic wind and warms up the body.
Garlic kills bacteria (in fact some call it Russian penicillin) and it’s also goodfor a cough.
Green onion is supremely antiviral and antibacterial, along with other benefits like being loaded with sulphur, nourishing the digestive system and improving your vision!
I drink this tea every day either if I’m sick OR if others in my family are sick as a preventative. It’s warming and you feel how good it is for you!
Drinking a ton of fluids is the #1 thing you can do to prevent getting sick, and you can put Self Heal in every beverage to boost your immune system. If fevers are going around in your house, you can work with Bee Balm flower essence. If there are sore throats in your household, you can try Stream Orchid flower essence.
Give your immune system a natural boost of protection with Wisdom Nectar's Immune Support Herbal Tincture -- a powerfully healing & supportive addition to your everyday.
Made up of immune-boosting herbs tinctured in vodka and sweetened with wildflower honey, it’s good for a straight up dropper dose or in your favorite beverages.
My favorite way to drink it? As a cordial! Hot like sake - or poured over a piece of ice!
Elderberry is one of the best antivirals out there. And the syrup is yummy! Everyone, even kids, love it. I love both brands Apitherapy and GAIA, but anything with a high concentration of elderberries will likely do the trick.
Get some in a spray bottle or buy a bulk bottle and pour some into an empty (clean!) mist bottle you have at home. Spray inside your mouth around 11 times and swallow it. This will kill pathogens in the back of your throat. Sometimes I even mist it into the air and on my face and breath it into my nose to keep my nose free of pathogens. Especially if you have sick ones around you.
When you’re feeling particularly yucky, make an effort to brush your teeth a little more frequently, paying extra attention to your tongue. Extra credit? After brushing teeth and tongue, stick your toothbrush a little farther back while brushing your tongue until you gag and cough up all that stuff stuck at the back of your throat. This is an ancient practice done by yogis to improve eyesight and prolong life. It also just feels really good to get that junk out of your body -- especially if you’re sick or on the verge of being sick. Your mouth fills up with an overabundance of bacteria and viral load, so keep those pearly whites and pink tongue brushed.
Another way to ingest large amounts of “Russian penicillin,” is a spread that I am addicted to. A company called Majestic Garlic makes raw garlic in a cream-like form, with healthy oils. Thisone WILL affect your breath, but who cares? Mission critical here is to remain healthy at all costs. Better to have garlic breath than be sneezing and dripping snot everywhere, leaving a trail of dirty tissues wherever you go.
Some people love it with chips (like a dip) or on sandwiches.
Confession: I eat it for breakfast - as an addictive dip for pieces of cold leftover chicken (am I weird?). Or I put a huge dollop on top of a couple fried eggs (I’m a sauce girl).
In any case, it’s super good for you. To find it at a store near you, click here.
If you’re handy in the kitchen, you could probably even make your own in a blender or food processor, especially if you have access to Asian stores and lots of pre-peeled fresh garlic. Speaking of making your own …
Recipe comes from our fashion designer friend in Aspen, Colorado. The health benefits are countless.
Spread it on GF toast, put it on eggs, put it in soup! Here’s the recipe:
2 huge bunches of fresh cilantro
1 huge bunch of flat Italian parsley
4-6 cloves of fresh garlic
2-6 jalapenos (depends on how spicy you like it)
Lemon juice to taste
Salt to taste
Dash of olive oil
Break off the hardest parts of the cilantro and parsley stems and toss everything in a food processor or blender until smooth. Store in a jar in your refrigerator.
Here’s how. Pour yourself a hot bath and add 2 cups of epsom salts and 2 cups of hydrogen peroxide (both can be purchased inexpensively in bulk at a pharmacy or corner store). Add flower essences & essential oils of your choice, or bath salts! Stay in the hot bath for 15-20 minutes. Be careful as you stand up, because you might be dizzy.
Extra credit? Wrap up in sheets and SWEAT. Have a cup of ginger tea (or the 3-ingredient tea from above). Sweat some more.
Even better? Do a meditation while you’re soaking in the bathtub. Every one of our bath salts comes with an intention-specific meditation for soaking in the essence of what you want more of.
If you don’t have our bath salts, every one of our products comes with a meditation; you’ll find one on every bottle we make!
Here’s to a sparkling, vibrant immune system so you can conquer the world with love and all of your unique qualities!
Love + flower petals,
Katie
P.S. If you’re feel like you’re coming down with something, avoid white sugar and sweets like the plague! White sugar shuts down your immune system for 6 hours! Only allow dark chocolate. ; )
