The Sacred Datura is sometimes also referred to as: moonflower, moon lily, angel’s trumpet, jimsonweed and thorn apple. A native of Arizona, it grows in sprawling bushes between 1000 and 7000 feet of elevation. It can be found along roadsides, in washes or areas where there is occasional disturbance by humans. Individual plants grow up to 2-3 feet high, sprawling 6-8 feet wide.
During the hot Arizona summer months, Sacred Datura plants may have dozens of flowers on it at any given time, that spiral open into full bloom at night. They are pollinated by sphinx or hawk moths, which can be mistaken for hummingbirds because their wings whir like hummers when they feed on the nectar of the newly opened blossoms. Each trumpet-shaped flower measures 6-8 inches in diameter, blooming from early evening and drooped shut by late morning the next day. The seed pods are round and spiny.
All parts of this night-blooming moonflower are poisonous and aside from the flower, every other part of the plant has a repellent smell and is extremely bitter to deter animals and humans from eating it. When handling the seeds, flowers or plant parts, hands must be washed with soap and water afterwards. [Never put Sacred Datura flowers in your bath.]
In the flower essence form, it is so heavily diluted through the process of making an essence, that there are no more plant parts in the elixir, only the life-force or energetic signature remain (similar to homeopathic remedies of arsenic or belladonna).
