In this episode I talked with Justin Booher about his work as culinary director for Amor Healing Kitchen in Charleston, SC, where volunteer teen chefs + kitchen mentors create healing meals for people facing a cancer diagnosis. We also talk about sensory dinner experiences + foraging for wild edible plants + flowers.
LISTEN to this episode on:
His extensive work with the AMOR Healing Kitchen, where he makes up recipes on the fly with donated vegetables + teaches teens how to cook healthy, local + nutrient-driven meals, after which they’re delivered to cancer patients + their caretakers.
Sensory dinners that work with as many of your senses as possible - at his warehouse home
His most avant garde dinner parties, including a Prince-themed dinner with each course created around a song
Foragable medicinal herb treasures from the desert that he used in cooking + liquors
How he forages for plants + edible flowers in the maritime Forest/barrier islands of the Carolina coast
Speaking what you want into existence and being open to it happening effortlessly
While studying sustainability and design at Arizona State University, Justin fell into the food + beverage industry. This shift led him to fall in love with natural food + farm relations, and the effects food has on the body and our communities. He volunteered in kitchens and farms in Croatia, Italy, Switzerland, and Spain, which deepened his desire to promote natural food choices as a central part of a healthy life.
He recently moved back to his home state of South Carolina. He also volunteers extensively at AMOR as the Culinary Director, where he and young teen volunteers put together nutrient-driven, local, in-season (and free!) meals for people facing serious health challenges.
He lives in a warehouse space that he holds events in -- from storytelling dinners to intimate shows to fundraisers. He is the manager at Edmund's Oast Restaurant and his other passion project is foraging the maritime Forest/barrier islands of the Carolina coast.
